Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that his government is dedicating extensive financial and personnel resources to combat the wildfires currently engulfing northwestern Ontario. These wildfires have resulted in multiple evacuations and have spread smoke throughout the province and even into the United States.

During a hospital announcement in Windsor on Thursday, Ford addressed the escalating crisis, emphasizing the significant risks posed by the rapidly growing wildfires in the northern regions. He remarked, "There have been no fatalities, which is pretty remarkable given the size of these fires." He assured the public, stating, "Our government will not spare an expense, not one single penny; we will spend whatever it takes to support getting them the support and resources they need to keep people safe."

The situation is particularly dire with winds out of the northwest potentially exacerbating dozens of existing forest fires. One notable wildfire has devastated the Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, also known as Collins First Nation, located north of Thunder Bay, damaging and destroying homes and buildings.

In light of these challenges, the Anishinabek Nation released a statement announcing their efforts to collect donations for the affected community members of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation, who have faced unexpected and severe destruction from the fast-moving wildfire. The statement highlighted that community members executed an emergency evacuation without direct assistance from emergency services, although all those present in the community at that time have since been accounted for.

Ford noted that the provincial government has doubled its baseline funding for wildland firefighting to $150 million in recent years, along with additional funding as needed to meet annual demands. He remarked, "Every year we spend significantly more," pointing out that the province has recently added 68 firefighting positions to the existing workforce of around 100. "We never underfund our firefighters, ever, never, ever," he asserted.

When asked about establishing better housing and support systems for evacuees, Ford praised municipalities such as Thunder Bay and Niagara Falls for their hospitality toward those impacted by the wildfires. While he acknowledged that funding is available to provide support following natural disasters, he did not specify the resources that would be allocated to individuals currently displaced by the wildfires.

“We're throwing every single resource we possibly can,” Ford emphasized. In a related development, Ontario's Emergency Preparedness and Response Minister Jill Dunlop announced via a social media post that the provincial government has submitted a formal request for assistance, seeking to expedite the deployment of federal resources to aid in evacuation efforts. Ford added that personnel from the Canadian Armed Forces are also involved in the response initiatives.

The forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada indicates that the community of Armstrong will experience widespread smoke, with wind gusts reaching up to 40 kilometers per hour throughout Thursday. The wildfires located west of Thunder Bay have shown considerable growth earlier in the week, leading to several evacuation orders for multiple communities.

As per provincial officials, there are currently 136 active fires in the northwest region, with 63 categorized as out of control. Additionally, there are 44 more fires burning in the northeast. The previous Wednesday saw the discovery of 16 new wildfires, while several existing fires to the north of Thunder Bay merged into a larger inferno. Overall, Ontario has experienced 483 fires this year, a significant increase compared to 351 at the same period last year, and above the ten-year average for mid-July, which stands at 320.
