LONDON (AP) — Influencer brothers Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate were arrested on Saturday in Miami following new charges brought against them by U.K. prosecutors, which include rape and sex trafficking. These latest developments add to the ongoing legal issues that have involved the brothers across multiple countries, including the U.S., U.K., and Romania.
The Crown Prosecution Service in Britain announced that the new charges pertain to four additional alleged victims, impacting the total number of alleged victims in the U.K. to seven. Allegations against the brothers include rape, assault, trafficking, and offenses related to "indecent images of a child and extreme pornography." The charges were made after Bedfordshire Police in southeastern England provided new evidence.
Joseph McBride, the brothers' attorney, vehemently criticized the charges, labeling them "filth and slander." He expressed confidence that the extradition request from the U.K. would be ultimately denied, despite the gravity of the allegations.
Andrew and Tristan Tate, aged 39 and 38 respectively, are dual U.S.-British citizens renowned for their controversial online presence promoting wealth, male dominance, and often misogynistic views. Andrew Tate is a former professional kickboxer with over 10 million followers on X (formerly Twitter), although he has faced bans from platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram for violating hate speech policies. He operates an online academy aimed at teaching young men about wealth accumulation and attracting women. Tristan Tate is also a former kickboxing champion.
The charges against the Tate brothers in the U.K. follow a series of legal troubles they have experienced since relocating to Romania in 2016. The new charges detail offenses that allegedly occurred between 2010 and 2017, with Andrew Tate facing seven further counts of rape, three counts of facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault, and 19 charges related to indecent images and extreme pornography. Meanwhile, Tristan Tate has been charged with one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape, and three counts of facilitating sex trafficking.
Previously, the Tates were charged with rape, bodily harm, and human trafficking regarding three other victims in the U.K. from 2012 to 2015. A U.K. High Court judge dismissed their legal request in June to be informed of their accusers' identities.
In Romania, the Tates were arrested in December 2022 along with two Romanian women, accused of engaging in schemes that lured women for sexual exploitation. They have maintained their innocence regarding these allegations, but the Romanian case has yet to advance due to various legal and procedural issues. Meanwhile, Andrew Tate has claimed that there is a political conspiracy aimed at silencing him, stating prosecutors lack evidence against him.
As for the extradition process, the brothers are scheduled to appear before a magistrate judge in Miami, where they are currently held in federal detention. Generally, bail is not granted for individuals detained for international extradition. A U.S. district judge will soon evaluate whether the brothers fulfill the criteria for extradition to the U.K. The final decision regarding their extradition will rest with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Historically, the State Department has favored granting extradition requests from the U.K. since ratifying a strengthened extradition treaty in 2007.
The Tate brothers had been in the U.S. after British police sought their extradition, which was contingent upon the conclusion of their legal matters in Romania. In February 2025, they were permitted to leave Romania after travel restrictions were lifted and subsequently traveled to Florida on a private jet. At that time, Romanian officials suggested that a U.S. official in the Trump administration had shown interest in their legal situation, although Trump denied any involvement when questioned about the matter.
