Four suspects have been charged, and a fifth remains at large after an alleged attempt to steal shopping carts full of power tools from a store in Markham, as reported by the York Regional Police (YRP). The incident occurred on Sunday, July 19, near Fairburn Drive and Highway 7 at approximately 7:45 PM. Loss prevention personnel at the store reportedly recognized the suspects from previous theft incidents and observed them loading power tools into shopping carts.

According to police statements, loss prevention staff followed the suspects as they exited the store without making any payment and began placing the stolen items into a vehicle. When the suspects entered their vehicle preparing to flee, officers arrived at the scene and attempted to contain the vehicle. During the attempted apprehension, the suspect vehicle came into contact with a police vehicle, prompting five suspects to flee on foot.

Following a brief foot chase, four of the five suspects were arrested, and the stolen power tools were recovered. No description has been provided for the outstanding suspect who managed to evade capture. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohit Sharma, 36, of no fixed address; Manpreet Singh, 30, from Brampton; Vishavjeet Singh, 22, from Mississauga; and Sukhinder Rakhra, 43, from Kitchener. Each of these men faces multiple theft-related charges.

It is notable that, at the time of their arrests, all four individuals were reportedly on separate release orders for unrelated offenses, raising questions about the rampant nature of repeat offenses in the area. YRP's efforts to combat retail theft continue, particularly as incidents of theft from stores become increasingly prevalent in various jurisdictions.
