A woman from Brampton is facing significant legal challenges as she has been charged with nearly 40 counts related to a series of rental fraud incidents. According to Peel police, an investigation revealed that the suspect, Savreet Kaur, 27, engaged in fraudulent activities by advertising homes, including basement apartments, for rent on various social media platforms. These advertisements were posted between May 2025 and February 2026.

The modus operandi involved enticing potential renters into signing rental agreements and sending deposits that covered the first and last month’s rent. Many victims reported that they had already vacated their previous living arrangements, only to arrive at the advertised properties and discover that the rentals were not available. This tactic led to significant distress and inconvenience for those affected.

Investigators have identified a total of 17 incidents associated with Kaur, resulting in combined financial losses exceeding $60,000. The Peel police stated that none of the victims managed to receive the promised accommodations, nor were they able to recover their deposited funds, leaving them in dire financial straits.

Savreet Kaur was arrested on July 13 and is now facing a total of 38 counts of fraud over $5,000, alongside one count of obstructing police. Following her arrest, she has been held in custody as she awaits a bail hearing, and the legal proceedings will determine the next steps in her case.

This case highlights the growing issue of rental fraud within the real estate market, especially as individuals seek housing in highly competitive areas. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when engaging in rental agreements, particularly when the transactions are conducted online.
