One of the Toronto police officers involved in a significant investigation into police corruption and organized crime has pleaded guilty to two charges on Tuesday. Derek McCormick, a member of a group of seven current and retired officers charged in the probe known as Project South, entered his plea in the Ontario Court of Justice located in Toronto.
McCormick pleaded guilty to theft under $5,000 and breach of trust, specifically for stealing found property. The implications of these charges carry a conditional sentence of 10 months. Now retired from the police force, McCormick is anticipated to receive his sentencing from Justice Jonathan Bliss on Tuesday.
In addition to the two charges for which he pleaded guilty, four other charges against McCormick, including three additional counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of obstruction of justice, are set to be withdrawn according to court documents.
The investigation known as Project South commenced in June 2025, initiated by York Regional Police when they dismantled an alleged conspiracy to murder a member of corrections management associated with an Ontario correctional institution. This operation has revealed significant misconduct as it was discovered that officers unlawfully accessed confidential information. This information was then relayed to criminals who utilized it to commit shootings and engage in various forms of violent crime.
The other six officers implicated in Project South are scheduled for their court appearances in Toronto on Wednesday. The investigation has also extended to include 19 other suspects from around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), who are facing an extensive array of charges. Some of these charges include conspiracy to commit murder, attempt to commit murder, and multiple offenses related to drug trafficking.
The developments surrounding Project South highlight serious allegations of corruption within the police force, raising significant concerns about accountability and ethics in law enforcement.
