The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed that a tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of a 31-year-old resident from Mississauga. The incident took place on Stewart Lake, located in Georgian Bay Township, just after 8 p.m. The canoe in which the individuals were traveling capsized approximately 40 feet from the shore.

According to OPP statements, there were two occupants in the canoe when it overturned. One of them was successfully rescued by a passerby in a boat. However, the second occupant went underwater and did not resurface, prompting immediate search efforts by authorities.

Investigators reported that the missing individual was located the following day, Sunday, by members of the OPP’s underwater search and recovery unit. The police are actively investigating the circumstances of the canoe capsizing in collaboration with the Ontario coroner’s office and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

In light of this incident, the OPP emphasized the importance of water safety for all boaters and paddlers. They advised that individuals should wear a properly fitted lifejacket or personal flotation device and check the weather conditions before embarking on water activities. Furthermore, they highlighted the necessity of ensuring that all required safety equipment is readily accessible.
