A tragic incident unfolded in Belleville, Ontario, when a 29-year-old man, identified as Sean Ward from Quinte West, engaged in gunfire with a police officer stationed outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue. This confrontation occurred on Sunday, which coincided with Yom Kippur—the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed that Ward opened fire on Constable Jeff Smith, a 13-year veteran of the Belleville police force. Reports indicate that a second officer also discharged their weapon during the exchange. Following the gunfire, Ward was critically injured and was transported to the hospital without vital signs. His condition later deteriorated to life-threatening, and he ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Monday night. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday.
Constable Smith, who was initially in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with critical injuries, saw his condition improve and is now reported to be stable. The incident has raised considerable concern within the community, especially given the significance of the date on which it occurred.
The president of the Sons of Jacob synagogue has branded the shooting a “hate crime.” Although the motive has not been officially confirmed by the Belleville police or the SIU, Kristy Denette, a spokesperson for the SIU, suggested during a press conference that it would be “common sense” to presume that the incident was motivated by hate.
Eyewitness accounts and estimates from the SIU indicate that between 25 and 30 shots were fired during the incident. The gunfire struck not only police vehicles but also civilian property, including homes and the windows of the synagogue. Due to the severity and scope of the scene, the SIU stated that it would take several days to clear the area and reopen the surrounding roads.
In response to this alarming attack, Belleville police Deputy Chief Sheri Meeks condemned the violence and announced that there would be an increase in patrols and a heightened police presence throughout Belleville. This initiative specifically aims to bolster security around places of worship and reassure the community.
