The wife of Constable Jeff Smith, a police officer from Belleville, Ontario, is sharing her emotional response following the traumatic incident where her husband was wounded in a shooting outside the Sons of Jacob synagogue. In her social media post, Ashley Smith described this past Sunday night as "the scariest and darkest day" of her family's life.
Ashley expressed her struggle to find the right words to convey her feelings but felt compelled to voice her thoughts on behalf of her husband, who is currently recovering in intensive care. She emphasized her love and unwavering support for Jeff, whom she referred to as a "man of integrity" devoted to his family and community.
This incident occurred on Yom Kippur, which is considered the holiest day for the Jewish community. Const. Jeff Smith was stationed at the synagogue as a precautionary measure when a suspect, identified as 29-year-old Sean Ward from Quinte West, emerged from a truck and opened fire using a shotgun. During the altercation, both Constable Smith and another officer returned fire.
Witnesses and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) reported that between 25 and 30 shots were exchanged, endangering both police personnel and civilians nearby. The gunfire struck police and civilian vehicles, as well as nearby homes, and shattered the synagogue's windows. In the chaos, Constable Smith was injured and subsequently transported to the hospital with critical injuries but has since stabilized.
Sean Ward, the alleged shooter, sustained severe injuries in the exchange. Initially transported to the hospital without vital signs, he was later declared to be in life-threatening condition and ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
