OTTAWA — An online petition in Canada has garnered nearly 30,000 signatures calling for the removal of U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra from the country. The petition accuses Hoekstra of undermining diplomatic relations between Canada and the United States and asserts that his interventions in Canadian political matters violate established diplomatic protocol. It will be presented in the House of Commons in the fall by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May.
The petition's origins trace back to a Calgary resident and is gaining momentum as it raises significant concerns regarding Hoekstra's remarks, which have been interpreted as provocative. According to the petition, Hoekstra's comments have normalized the idea of U.S. annexation of Canada, further adding strain to the diplomatic ties between the two nations. His assertion that the annexation discussion could be beneficial for Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Trump has particularly drawn ire.
Hoekstra has publicly expressed his disappointment over what he perceives as an "anti-American" sentiment emanating from Canadian political leaders, specifically citing the rhetoric present during the recent federal election campaign. He characterized such perspectives as detrimental, particularly when Canadian politicians label the Trump administration’s tariff actions as a trade war. In addition, he has criticized actions taken by Canadian politicians that discourage tourism to the U.S. or that remove American products from Canadian shelves.
In response to questions from Canadian journalists regarding his controversial statements, Hoekstra maintained that it is his responsibility to convey the views of the Trump administration. A spokesperson from the U.S. embassy in Ottawa acknowledged the petition's existence but refrained from providing detailed commentary on the matter.
