GENEVA (AP) – An 18-year-old man armed with a sword launched a violent attack at the Brinell School in the central Swedish town of Fagersta on Friday, resulting in one fatality and at least two individuals seriously injured. This incident occurred during school hours when approximately 400 to 500 students were present at the facility.
According to Police Chief Tommy Alriksson, the suspect was apprehended shortly after the attack, which involved the use of both a sword and firearms during the arrest. Authorities have yet to clarify whether the assailant sustained any injuries in the course of his detention; however, he is currently held in custody and has not required hospitalization.
The motive behind the attack remains uncertain as the investigation is still ongoing. Police Chief Alriksson emphasized that there is no indication that more than one person was involved in the incident. He noted the importance of the investigation and indicated that law enforcement has already conducted two searches of residences connected to the suspect. Many witnesses will likely be interviewed as part of the ensuing inquiry.
In light of the ongoing investigation, Alriksson refrained from disclosing excessive information to avoid influencing potential witnesses. The incident has had a profound impact on the local community, with the two seriously injured victims being boys aged between 12 and 17, according to reports from the TT news agency. Specific details about the deceased victim have not been disclosed.
Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad confirmed that the authorities received an alarm in the early afternoon. In response to the attack, law enforcement officials quickly cordoned off a large area around the school and instituted lockdown measures at several nearby educational institutions. Roadblocks were also established as part of the emergency response.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his deep concern regarding the violence in Fagersta, occurring right after the summer break. Through a post on the X social media platform, he addressed the situation, stating, “We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively. Our thoughts are with all those affected.”
In response to the tragedy, the Fagersta city government has set up a crisis center at a local sports hall near the school to provide support and assistance to those impacted by the events. The Vastmanland County government reported that numerous individuals were affected, noting that police, firefighters, and healthcare workers were working collaboratively to offer care and support to the community.
The incident has raised pressing concerns about safety in schools and the well-being of students, prompting discussions about preventive measures and community support in the aftermath of such a traumatic event. As the investigation continues, the local authorities are focused on understanding the full extent of the attack and its implications for the Fagersta community.
