The Toronto Police Service has announced the arrest of a woman who is alleged to have stolen purses from senior citizens in the city's Weston neighbourhood. The suspect reportedly targeted vulnerable individuals while they were engaged in shopping activities.

According to police reports, the thefts took place between September 1 and September 6, 2023. During this period, the accused is believed to have frequented various retail stores in the vicinity of Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West. Her method of operation involved watching senior citizens place their purses or handbags in the upper sections of their shopping carts. Once the victims diverted their attention, she would seize the opportunity to snatch their purses and exit the store swiftly.

On October 6, law enforcement officers received a tip about a suspect matching the description of the alleged thief. Following this information, police arrested 29-year-old Ashante Whittaker. She now faces multiple charges, including four counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card, and two counts of fraud under $5,000. Whittaker is scheduled to appear in court on January 8, 2027.

Following her arrest, investigators released photographs of the accused, expressing concern that there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward. The police are urging anyone who may have been affected or who possesses relevant information to get in touch with them.

As the holiday season approaches, which often sees increased foot traffic in stores and events, the Toronto Police Service is taking this opportunity to remind the public about the importance of being vigilant and safeguarding personal belongings. They highlight the necessity of remaining aware of one’s surroundings, especially in crowded spaces where theft may occur more easily.

To help prevent becoming a victim of theft, authorities have provided several safety tips. These include always securing personal items and keeping them within sight. Using zipped bags, cross-body straps, and internal pockets can significantly reduce the risk of pickpocketing. Additionally, individuals are advised against placing wallets and phones in their back pockets, as these can be easily accessed by thieves.

Another important recommendation from the police is to avoid leaving parcels or shopping bags unattended, even for brief periods. Shoppers should also consider storing items in the trunk of their vehicles before reaching their final destination and ensure that all doors and windows are locked. Remaining alert and aware of one’s surroundings is crucial, and any suspicious behavior should be reported to on-site security or the Toronto Police Service directly.

The recent arrest marks an important step in addressing theft in retail environments, particularly concerning one of the most vulnerable demographics—senior citizens. The police continue to encourage community cooperation in order to enhance public safety during the bustling shopping season ahead.
