MEXICO CITY – In a historic achievement, twenty-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest champion in Formula 1 history as of Sunday, clinching the title with four races remaining in the season. This monumental victory establishes Antonelli not only as a rising star in motorsport but also marks him as the first Italian to win the championship since the legendary Alberto Ascari in 1953.

During the recent Mexico City Grand Prix, Antonelli secured his title with a strategic performance that allowed him to build an unassailable lead in the championship standings over his teammate, George Russell, and racing rival, Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. Despite finishing third in the race, his overall position in the championship was more than sufficient to cement his place in F1 history, surpassing the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who became the youngest champion at the age of 23 in 2010.

Upon receiving the news of his championship win, Antonelli expressed his gratitude over the team radio, saying, “Thank you so much, we did it, we did it, thank you so much … thank you.” His jubilant reaction reflects the immense pressure and anticipation that accompanied the race. The Mexico City GP saw Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing emerge victorious, marking his sixth win in this event.

The race itself experienced dramatic moments, including a red flag incident on lap 46 when Valtteri Bottas crashed into the wall at the first corner due to issues with his right-side suspension. Fortunately, Bottas was able to exit the car unaided and waved to the fans as a sign of reassurance before receiving further medical assessments as a precautionary measure.

As the race resumed, Verstappen maintained his lead, followed closely by Charles Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Lando Norris, and Russell. However, Verstappen remained dominant throughout the race, ultimately securing the win and adding to his impressive tally of successes for the season.

Looking ahead, Formula 1 will next head to Brazil and then to Las Vegas for the upcoming races. However, the schedule for the final two Grands Prix in Qatar and Abu Dhabi remains uncertain due to ongoing instability in the region. The F1 community and its fans will be watching closely as the situation develops, hoping for a resolution that will allow the season to conclude as planned.
