Toronto police have reported a significant security breach, as a suspect managed to escape custody from the Toronto South Detention Centre. The incident occurred on Monday, January 26, 2026, just before midnight, in the vicinity of Horner Avenue and Kipling Avenue.
The primary suspect, identified as Steven Alexander Guzman Marroquin, is a 32-year-old resident of Toronto. He managed to impersonate another inmate who was scheduled for release, effectively deceiving the facility’s staff. Investigators noted that Guzman Marroquin pretended to be this other inmate, who had arrangements for an ankle monitoring device upon his release.
In a remarkable lapse in protocol, the detention centre staff inadvertently secured the ankle monitor onto Guzman Marroquin, allowing him to exit the premises undetected. The ankle bracelet was later discovered discarded at a nearby gas station, raising serious concerns about the security measures in place at the facility.
Authorities have issued a warning that Guzman Marroquin is considered dangerous. He is described as standing five feet nine inches tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds. Additionally, he has a ponytail hairstyle and a beard, which could assist in identifying him during the ongoing search.
Toronto police have placed Guzman Marroquin on their wanted list for several offenses, including:
- Escape Lawful Custody
- Personation with Intent
- Obstruct Police Officer
- Mischief Under $5000
- Theft Under $5000
The escape of Guzman Marroquin illustrates potential flaws within correctional procedures and highlights the need for heightened vigilance in monitoring inmate releases. As the search continues, police urge the public to remain alert and to report any sightings of the escapee.
