An Arizona sheriff announced on Monday that "we do in fact have a crime scene" as authorities continue to search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of "Today" show host Savannah Guthrie, who was reported missing over the weekend. Nancy Guthrie, who has limited mobility, was last seen around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday at her home in the Tucson area.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated during a news conference that there are indications at the residence suggesting that Nancy Guthrie did not leave on her own. He emphasized the need for the community to assist in the investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward. "I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls," Nanos stated.
When asked to elaborate on why the authorities believe the scene to be a crime scene, Sheriff Nanos mentioned that Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and referenced "other things" that suggest she did not depart willingly. However, he refrained from providing specific details. Nanos reassured the public that Nancy is of sound mind, stating, "This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack," and noted that she requires daily medication.
The sheriff gave further context at a news conference on Sunday night, detailing that Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home and that her family reported her missing around noon on Sunday, following a call from a church member who noted her absence. Concerned family members arrived at her home to find that she was missing and subsequently called 911.
Search efforts have involved the use of drones and search dogs, alongside search and rescue teams and volunteers, with assistance from the Border Patrol. Interestingly, Nanos remarked that it is uncommon for the homicide team to be involved in missing person cases, but he noted that the circumstances surrounding this case warranted special attention. He stated, "This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we located just looking at the scene," while also not ruling out the possibility of foul play.
As the situation developed on Monday morning, Nanos reported that search crews had worked diligently but had since shifted their focus, stating that the operation is less of a search mission and more of a crime scene investigation. Savannah Guthrie, who was not present at the anchor's desk during Monday's broadcast, issued a statement via the "Today" show expressing her gratitude for the support her family has received. "On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support," she said.
In her statement, Savannah emphasized that the family's primary concern is the safe return of her mother, Nancy. The sheriff confirmed that Savannah Guthrie is currently in Arizona as authorities continue their investigation into her mother's disappearance.
