The Toronto Blue Jays have officially designated Kevin Gausman as their Opening Day starter for the upcoming season, as announced by manager John Schneider during a press conference on Saturday. This decision marks a significant moment for Gausman, who is set to pitch against the Oakland Athletics in front of a home crowd at the Rogers Centre on March 27.
Gausman, who is 35 years old, expressed excitement at being chosen for this pivotal role. Schneider conveyed his enthusiasm, stating, “Pumped for him, pumped for us. About time he got one, kinda what me and (pitching coach) Pete (Walker) told him.” He further mentioned that while the rest of the team's rotation is still being finalized, having Gausman lead off the season is a positive development.
Last season was another strong year for Gausman during his fourth campaign with the Blue Jays. He achieved a commendable 3.59 ERA and a 1.062 WHIP across 32 starts. Over the course of his tenure with the Blue Jays, Gausman has compiled a record of 48 wins and 41 losses, along with a 3.48 ERA in 125 regular-season appearances. His performance has gradually cemented him as a key player for the franchise.
Although Gausman faced challenges in his initial two post-season appearances with the Blue Jays, he excelled during last year's playoff run leading to the World Series. During that time, he pitched to a remarkable 2.93 ERA and 0.913 WHIP in six postseason outings, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
Schneider emphasized the importance of experience in navigating the unique challenges of Opening Day, commenting on Gausman's past performances in high-stakes games. “I think just kind of the trust factor, and what you can expect with some extra hoopla, and ceremonies, and the timing being off a little bit — you gotta kinda navigate that. And Kev’s done that in big games before,” Schneider noted, further highlighting the value of having a reliable and long-term player to initiate the season.
Notably, this is the first time Gausman has been named the Opening Day starter for the Blue Jays, although he has previously held this honor with other franchises. In 2021, he was the Opening Day starter for the San Francisco Giants, and in 2017, he was named the starter for the Baltimore Orioles. Before Gausman, Jose Berrios had taken on the Opening Day responsibility for the Blue Jays for the past two seasons, underscoring the significance of this transition.
In summary, Kevin Gausman stepping into the Opening Day starter role for the Blue Jays is a positive assertion of his value to the team. It highlights both his recent successes and the confidence the coaching staff has in his ability to lead the rotation as the season commences.
