The Toronto Catholic District School Board has announced that two high school teachers are no longer employed by the board following serious allegations regarding their conduct. This comes after claims surfaced that the educators exchanged racist messages on a social media platform associated with their school.
Advocacy group Parents of Black Children has reported that the inappropriate messages were discovered on an Instagram account related to student athletics at James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School. These messages allegedly contained a racist slur as well as an anti-Black meme, raising significant concerns about the environment and culture within the school.
The incident initially caught the attention of school officials after a student, who had access to the Instagram account, took screenshots of the exchanged messages and brought them to the attention of the school’s principal. This prompted an immediate investigation by the school leadership.
According to the school board, once the images were presented to them, the two teachers were placed on leave without delay. Subsequently, it was confirmed that they are no longer working for the board. The situation has highlighted the board's commitment to addressing issues of racism and discrimination within educational settings.
The board has stated that they take racism and discrimination “extremely seriously.” They have acknowledged the profound impact that this incident has had on the school community, illustrating the need to promote a positive and inclusive environment in educational institutions.
