Toronto Fire Services (TFS) is scheduled to provide a significant update on Thursday regarding the Thorncliffe Park condominium fire that has impacted the lives of hundreds of residents. The update will be delivered by TFS Chief Jim Jessop at 1 p.m. at Toronto City Hall, although he will not entertain questions following his statement.
The catastrophic five-alarm fire ignited on November 27, 2025, at 11 Thorncliffe Park Drive and continued to burn for several weeks, only being declared extinguished on December 15, 2025. The flames quickly spread to the adjacent building at 21 Overlea Boulevard, complicating the firefighting efforts.
Significant carbon monoxide levels were detected during the fire, necessitating the evacuation of both affected buildings. In total, over 400 residential units were evacuated, forcing residents to seek alternative accommodations. The process of returning residents to their homes commenced in stages starting in January 2026, following the extensive firefighting efforts.
At the time of the fire, Fire Chief Jim Jessop described the incident as "unprecedented and extremely challenging." Firefighters faced particularly tough conditions while attempting to extinguish the flames that had smoldered between the walls of the neighboring buildings. The limited space, ranging from 25 to 50 millimeters, complicated direct access for firefighting operations.
Furthermore, Jessop noted that the gap between the buildings contained compressed wood materials that burned slowly, making it exceedingly difficult for the firefighting crew to gain ground. As of now, the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and investigators are still working to uncover how the blaze first ignited.
The update from Chief Jessop will be available for viewing via livestream on CityNews 24/7. This situation remains critically important as the community begins to recover from the aftermath of this significant fire incident.
