The Humane Society of Greater Niagara is actively seeking information regarding the previous owner of a severely neglected dog named Jacob, who was discovered in a critical condition. On April 11, the agency received a distressing call about a dog abandoned in a parking lot near the George Nicholson Memorial Trail in St. Catharines, Ontario. Jacob, identified as a young bully hound mix, was found unable to walk or even stand, and exhibited multiple open sores on his legs and hips.
Cindy Dunne, the executive director of the Humane Society of Greater Niagara, stated that Jacob likely spent very little, if any, time outside of a crate. His fur displayed a permanent discoloration due to prolonged exposure to urine and feces. Dunne described Jacob's condition as one of the worst cases of neglect they have encountered, emphasizing that the dog was significantly emaciated and incapable of drinking water from a bowl as he had not learned how to do so.
In the weeks following his rescue, Jacob has shown signs of improvement. The sores on his body have begun to heal, and he is gradually gaining weight and exhibiting increased interest in walking. Veterinarian Dr. Lisa Van Lammers remarked on Jacob's remarkable resilience, noting that he is slowly adapting to his new life and that his calorie intake is being consistently increased to support his recovery.
Dunne highlighted a concerning trend where individuals may travel out of town specifically to abandon animals. She urged that there is no shame in bringing an animal to a shelter or discussing options for surrendering a pet, emphasizing that help is always available.
The Humane Society has struggled to generate leads from local residents and is now extending their search for Jacob’s previous owner throughout southern Ontario. They hope that anyone with information regarding Jacob or his circumstances will reach out to assist in the investigation. Understanding his medical history is vital for the agency, as it would guide Jacob's ongoing care. Moreover, based on the overall circumstances of the case, there may be grounds for pursuing criminal charges against his previous owner.
