KYIV, Ukraine — In March, Ukraine successfully utilized interceptor systems to shoot down over 33,000 Russian drones of various types, marking a record monthly figure since the onset of Russia’s all-out invasion over four years ago, according to Ukraine's Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. This achievement underscores Ukraine’s growing capabilities in aerial defense amidst ongoing conflict.

In tandem with its defensive measures, Ukraine's domestically developed long-range attack drones have struck Russian oil facilities in the Black Sea region for the third time in less than two weeks. These strikes have led to local evacuations and prompted warnings from Russia regarding potential environmental consequences. The ability to carry out such precision strikes demonstrates Ukraine's advancement in drone technology, which has garnered global military interest.

To further enhance its air defense, Ukraine is increasing the supply of interceptor drones to counter Russian aerial assaults. The military has initiated a new command within the air force aimed at bolstering these capabilities. This strategic move aligns with the rising demand for interceptor drones from Middle Eastern and Gulf nations amid their own regional conflicts.

Moreover, Ukraine claims its offensive capabilities have significantly improved. The Defense Ministry revealed that Ukrainian forces have more than doubled their deep-strike range since Russia's invasion began in February 2022. Initially capable of striking military targets approximately 630 kilometers (400 miles) away, Ukrainian forces can now engage targets as far as 1,750 kilometers (1,100 miles) behind enemy lines. This increase in range has allowed Ukraine to target critical Russian oil installations that finance the war effort and production facilities supporting Russian armed forces.

Most recently, Ukraine struck the Russian oil refinery in Tuapse, a Black Sea port, in a coordinated operation that involved multiple branches of its defense and security forces. The actions taken earlier in the month had already resulted in the destruction of 24 oil storage tanks and damage to four others, although independent verification of these claims was not available. Visual evidence, including videos released by local officials, depicted significant damage and environmental hazards following the strikes.

As a result of these attacks, emergency officials have began evacuating residents from near the Tuapse refinery, although specific details on the numbers and duration of the evacuations were not disclosed. In response to the situation, Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the potential for serious environmental repercussions from the attacks while affirming that local authorities were managing the crises.

Both Russian and Ukrainian forces have been actively engaging in drone attacks. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that it intercepted 186 Ukrainian drones in various regions, including Crimea and the Black Sea and Azov seas. Concurrently, Russian drone assaults on Ukraine resulted in casualties, including three civilian deaths and several injuries in different regions, highlighting the ongoing violence affecting both sides.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, two individuals were killed in the city of Chuhuiv, and a 40-year-old man died in Kryvyi Rih, which is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A rare daytime drone attack in Kyiv resulted in two injuries, while another strike on Konotop disrupted power and water supply, illustrating the widespread impact of the ongoing conflict.
