SAFFORD, Ariz. (AP) – Grammy-winning rapper Prakazrel "Pras" Michel, a founding member of the iconic hip-hop group the Fugees, reported to federal prison on Thursday to begin a 14-year sentence. This sentence comes after his conviction for illegally funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.
At 53 years old, Michel has been classified as an inmate at a low-security correctional institution in Arizona, according to federal records. A spokesperson for Michel, Erica Dumas, made a statement highlighting the emotional toll this situation has taken on him and his family, describing it as a “painful day.” She emphasized that Pras respects the legal process as he begins his incarceration but noted that his legal team is still contesting the charges against him.
Michel’s legal troubles culminated in a conviction in 2023 on ten counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. Prosecutors presented evidence indicating that he had received over $120 million from Malaysian billionaire Low Taek Jho, widely known as Jho Low. It was alleged that Michel funneled portions of this substantial sum through straw donors to support Obama’s campaign. Moreover, he was accused of attempting to obstruct a U.S. Justice Department investigation into Low, as well as tampering with witnesses and committing perjury during his trial. Jho Low has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
The Fugees, formed in the early 1990s, included Michel along with fellow musicians Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean. The group achieved significant acclaim, winning two Grammy Awards and selling tens of millions of albums worldwide. Michel’s journey from a celebrated artist to facing serious legal challenges has provoked considerable media attention and public discussion regarding the implications of foreign influence on U.S. politics.
