OPP Officer Tarun Bali Killed in Line of Duty

An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer tragically lost his life in the line of duty on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, in the northern community of Hearst. The OPP confirmed that Constable Tarun Bali was critically injured during an investigation being conducted by James Bay OPP officers around 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6, located approximately three hours northwest of Timmins.

Despite the immediate response to the scene, Bali was later pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding his death remain undisclosed; however, police have confirmed that a suspect is currently in custody.

Constable Tarun Bali was stationed at the Dufferin Detachment but was deployed with the James Bay Detachment at the time of his passing. At just two and a half years into his service, his untimely death has generated significant sorrow within the community and the policing sector. OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique paid tribute to Bali on social media, stating, "His courage and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten." Carrique extended heartfelt condolences to Bali's family, colleagues, and the broader policing community during this tragic period.

An ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Bali's death is being conducted by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. As of the time of this report, further details remain scarce, although police indicated that an update would be provided later in the evening.

The OPP Association also released a statement, expressing their thoughts and prayers for Bali's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. In a poignant message, OPP Association President David Sabatini noted, "This is every police and family member's worst nightmare. This is another reminder of the dangers that our Members face each and every day as they serve and protect the citizens of Ontario."

Condolences have poured in from various figures, including Premier Doug Ford, who expressed his deep sadness over Constable Bali's death. In a post on social media, Ford said, "I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of OPP Provincial Constable Tarun Bali, who was killed in the line of duty today while serving in Hearst. On behalf of the people of Ontario, I extend my sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and OPP colleagues. We honour his courage, service, and sacrifice."
