On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy each held telephone conversations with U.S. President Donald Trump, who was celebrating his 80th birthday. These discussions took place in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and ahead of this week’s G7 summit.
Putin’s conversation with Trump lasted just under an hour, as reported by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. During the call, Trump stressed the need to bring an end to hostilities in Ukraine and expressed his willingness to persuade European allies and Kyiv to work towards that goal. He noted that a swift resolution to the conflict could lead to a "truly new quality of U.S.-Russian relations." Additionally, Trump pointed out that recent attacks on civilian targets in Russia could complicate the path to peace, although the White House has not confirmed these claims or commented on the discussion.
In response, Putin argued that Kyiv’s assaults on Russian civilian infrastructure would not change the battlefield dynamics and extended an invitation to Zelenskyy to meet him in Moscow if he desired further talks. Additionally, Ushakov revealed that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected to travel to Russia soon.
During their conversation, Trump also addressed tensions surrounding Iran, asserting that a U.S. agreement with Tehran was nearing completion and expressing hope that the results would be disclosed soon.
On the Ukrainian side, Zelenskyy described his conversation with Trump as "wonderful." Beyond extending birthday wishes to Trump, Zelenskyy acknowledged the U.S. president's support for Ukraine during their exchange. He indicated they discussed potential measures to bring peace closer, although he did not share specific details. Zelenskyy also updated Trump on improvements in Ukraine's positions along the eastern front lines and expressed intent to delve further into discussions during the upcoming G7 summit.
The discussions were timely as Trump prepared to host a unique birthday event involving a UFC fight on the White House lawn, marking a historic first for U.S. presidents. Following the celebration, Trump planned to fly overnight to France for the G7 summit, where discussions regarding the Ukraine conflict are anticipated to be a key focus. Zelenskyy is expected to be part of the summit discussions on Tuesday.
Trump has previously expressed frustration regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, claiming during his candidacy that he could resolve the situation within 24 hours of taking office. However, he has since refrained from making such assertions. He has also expressed increasing annoyance with the war between Israel and Iran, a situation that has exacerbated financial markets and elevated concerns about inflation due to rising gas prices.
As diplomatic talks continue, fighting in Ukraine persists. Recent reports noted that Ukrainian drone strikes resulted in casualties in Russia's Oryol and Bryansk regions, with one person killed and several others injured in the residential areas. A separate attack hit fuel storage facilities in Yaroslavl, approximately 440 miles from the Ukrainian border, igniting fires. Zelenskyy remarked that this attack targeted an important oil facility crucial for Russia's reserves, underscoring Ukraine's strategy to attack Russian oil and gas infrastructure to undermine Moscow's war efforts.
In a related development, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the U.K. is investigating a sanctioned tanker, the Smyrtos, suspected of belonging to Russia's "shadow fleet." British forces detained the vessel in the English Channel in cooperation with French authorities, marking the first U.K.-led operation of its kind. Starmer commented that this operation serves as a significant blow to Russia, emphasizing that those supporting Putin's war cannot evade scrutiny.
