A 36-year-old man has been apprehended following a suspected hate-motivated assault on a Durham transit bus earlier this year. The incident, which took place in April, involved a man verbally accosting a Muslim woman, culminating in a physical attack that was captured on video.
According to Toronto police, the incident was reported when a man directed several derogatory and anti-Muslim comments at a woman before allegedly assaulting her and exiting the bus. In a brief video shared by the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) on X, disturbing footage reveals a man swearing at the woman and using the term “terror” at least twice before lunging at her and delivering a kick.
The victim suffered minor physical injuries as a result of the assault. Although the transit bus originated in Durham Region, the incident occurred in Scarborough, specifically in the vicinity of Progress Avenue and Milner Avenue. This jurisdictional aspect led the Toronto police’s hate-crime unit to take over the investigation of the case.
On June 17, 2026, police arrested Thirukumaran Kandasamy, a resident of Toronto, charging him with assault and criminal harassment. The allegations against Kandasamy carry substantial implications, as he may also face additional hate-crime-related charges. Such charges would be applied if the Crown determines that the assault was motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate. In the event of a conviction, it is expected that the judge will consider any motivation rooted in hatred as an aggravating factor when sentencing.
The growing concern surrounding hate-motivated crimes has prompted local authorities and NGOs to raise awareness and advocate for the rights and dignity of marginalized communities, particularly in the wake of incidents like this. The NCCM has expressed outrage over the event and is calling for action to prevent further occurrences of Islamophobia and similar hate crimes.
