Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have confirmed that a sixth individual has succumbed to injuries sustained in a devastating two-vehicle collision that occurred in Mapleton, Ontario, on June 12. The latest casualty is a 42-year-old man from Brampton, who was the driver and sole occupant of an SUV involved in the crash.
The incident resulted in significant tragedy, particularly for a passenger van, which carried ten people at the time. Among the van's passengers were five children, all of whom tragically lost their lives at the scene. The deceased children were identified as members of a family from Elmira, Ontario, and were aged 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 years old. The loss has been felt profoundly within the community, prompting a scheduled funeral service for the children on Saturday afternoon.
The collision raised urgent concerns, prompting OPP to initiate an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the tragic event. They have issued a call for witnesses to come forward with any information that could shed light on the accident.
In addition to the fatalities, several individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries as a result of the crash. While the five children and their family are mourned, the OPP has also acknowledged the other passengers, with some suffering serious injuries and others with more minor ones.
To support those impacted by this horrific event, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched for Peter and Elizabeth Bartsch, a couple who were traveling in the van but were not related to the deceased children. Additionally, a separate GoFundMe has been set up specifically for the Doerksen family, who are facing the unimaginable grief of losing their children.
The OPP continues to focus their efforts on uncovering the details surrounding the crash, as the community rallies together to support those affected by this tragic incident. The emotional toll on family, friends, and the local community is immense, as they come to terms with the heartbreaking loss.
