The Toronto Marlies have achieved a significant milestone by clinching the American Hockey League's Calder Cup. This victory was secured on June 19, 2026, during Game 5 of the best-of-seven championship series against the Chicago Wolves, with the final score being a tight 4-3.
Vinni Lettieri played a pivotal role in this triumph, scoring the game-winning power-play goal in the second period. The Marlies managed to rally and won the series decisively with a 4-1 overall score, marking their second championship title in AHL history. Their first Calder Cup victory came in 2018.
Toronto's offensive efforts were bolstered by contributions from Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jacob Quillan, who each found the net in the same second period. Prior to these goals, Landon Sim had scored just 28 seconds before the end of the first period, narrowing Chicago's lead to 2-1. This goal proved crucial as it set the stage for Toronto's comeback in the subsequent period.
In net for the Marlies, Artur Akhtyamov delivered an impressive performance, making 27 saves to ensure the victory. His performance throughout the playoffs earned him the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the most valuable player, a recognition well-deserved for his stellar play. The 24-year-old Akhtyamov, a fourth-round pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2020 NHL Draft, concluded the playoffs with a record of 15-7. He maintained a commendable 2.22 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage, complemented by two shutouts across 22 playoff games.
The game saw strong efforts from the Chicago Wolves as well, with Felix Under Sorum standing out by scoring twice and adding an assist. Josiah Slavin contributed with another goal for the Wolves, and their goaltender, Cayden Primeau, stopped 19 shots throughout the match. Despite their efforts, the Wolves fell short against a resilient Marlies team.
Throughout the postseason, Toronto showcased remarkable skill and determination, finishing with a 16-8 record. Notably, they won 10 of their last 13 games leading into the Calder Cup Final. Their playoff run included victories over the Rochester Americans (2-1), the Laval Rocket (3-2), the Cleveland Monsters (3-2), and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (4-2), before overcoming the Chicago Wolves in the final series. This playoff campaign has placed the Marlies in elite company, making them only the third team in AHL history to win five series in a single playoff year.
