The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move by trading pitcher Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs, as confirmed by various sources. The trade was first reported by Ken Rosenthal and Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. In exchange for Gausman, the Blue Jays will receive outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene. Notably, Southisene was ranked as the Cubs' No. 13 prospect, while Bateman held the No. 21 spot according to MLB Pipeline.
This trade marks the end of a notable chapter for the Blue Jays, which will miss Gausman, a player who was not only skilled on the mound but also deeply valued within the organization. Over his four and a half seasons with the Blue Jays, Gausman established himself as a reliable starting pitcher, earning numerous accolades including an All-Star selection and Cy Young votes in two different seasons. He posted a commendable 3.79 ERA across 40.1 post-season innings.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Gausman's contributions, stating that he will be remembered as one of the best free-agent signings in the franchise’s history, especially from a pitching perspective. Schneider highlighted Gausman’s consistency, professionalism, and ability to be a good teammate as vital qualities that made him an essential part of the team's recent successes.
During his tenure with the Blue Jays, Gausman signed a five-year deal worth $110 million in December 2021. In 148 regular-season starts, he managed to achieve a 3.62 ERA over 861 innings, accumulating 12.8 wins above replacement. Gausman’s effectiveness on the mound was complemented by his ability to connect with fans, making his final home start at Rogers Centre particularly emotional, as he received a heartfelt ovation.
Reflecting on the support from fans, Gausman expressed his gratitude, mentioning how exceptional it was to experience such moments and how he aimed to soak in the appreciation. Statistically, he ranks among the franchise's all-time leaders, sitting seventh in strikeouts with 920, ninth in starts with 148, and twelfth in wins with 53.
Teammate George Springer also acknowledged Gausman’s impact not only as a player but as a person. He reiterated Gausman’s consistency and strong desire to take the mound in crucial games, emphasizing the importance of his character and the care he showed toward the team.
Although the 35-year-old pitcher would have preferred not to be traded, he recognized the business nature of baseball. Gausman has previously received a qualifying offer, making him ineligible for another, meaning the Blue Jays had no option for draft pick compensation and had to trade him to gain a return.
Following this trade, the Blue Jays face a gap in their starting rotation. Candidates like Chad Dallas and CJ Van Eyk are poised to step up and take on additional innings as the season winds down.
