Planning a visit to the Toronto Islands is generally meant to be an enjoyable experience; however, recent reports indicate that scammers are making this process challenging for potential visitors.

Officials from the City of Toronto have issued warnings about fraudulent websites that are selling fake ferry tickets. These deceptive sites are designed to appear as if they are affiliated with the city and aim to trick users into providing sensitive information such as credit card details, ultimately stealing their money.

City officials emphasize that ferry tickets can only be legitimately purchased from the official City of Toronto website. This reminder is crucial for residents and visitors alike to avoid falling victim to these scams.

In a move to promote community engagement, Toronto City Council has also approved free ferry tickets for children, youth, and seniors for the month of August. This decision follows the recent “waterfront victory” against the provincial government’s proposed expansion of Billy Bishop airport.

The initiative is described as a gesture of gratitude towards the many Torontonians who voiced their opinions regarding the airport expansion. The council aims to encourage more residents to explore the unique attractions of the Toronto Islands through this program.

The estimated cost of this ferry ticket program is approximately $940,000. Notably, both Councillor Chow and Councillor Malik have assured the public that this expense will not be covered by taxpayer dollars. Instead, funding will derive from the Spadina-Fort York ward’s share of Section 37 funds, which are collected from developers as contributions for community benefits.
