Pope Leo XIV Makes Progress After Lung Surgery

ROME (AP) – Pope Leo XIV has made significant strides in his recovery following surgery to remove a cancerous nodule from his lung. On Thursday, Leo met with a top aide and resumed his daily work from Gemelli Hospital, where he was treated. According to his personal doctor, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and the head of thoracic surgery, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, the pope's post-operative tests are within normal ranges, indicating a healthy recovery.

During a physiotherapy session, the 71-year-old pontiff was able to perform full mobility exercises independently, showcasing his progressive recovery. The doctors provided a positive update, stating, "The chest X-ray revealed good recovery of the operated lung. Overall, his postoperative recovery is proceeding as expected."

The Vatican also confirmed that Leo XIV had met with Archbishop Paolo Rudelli, the chief of staff or “substitute” of the Vatican, who is responsible for much of the day-to-day administrative functions. Leon has resumed conducting his administrative duties while continuing his recovery at the hospital. For the second consecutive day, the pope celebrated Mass with fellow priests in a special chapel set up conveniently near his hospital room.

Pope Leo underwent surgery to remove the lower right lobe of his lung on Tuesday after doctors identified a suspected cancerous nodule. Subsequent tests confirmed that he has adenocarcinoma, the most prevalent type of lung cancer. Doctors are currently awaiting results from further tests to ascertain the molecular makeup of the cancer and whether it has metastasized beyond the lobe, which may necessitate additional treatment.

There has been speculation regarding the potential impact on the pope’s planned trip to South America, scheduled from November 6 to 17. The Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni referenced the pope's previous remarks when he expressed gratitude for prayers regarding his upcoming pastoral visit to Peru, which he delivered in Spanish to a Peruvian group. The trip is also set to include visits to Uruguay and Argentina, indicating the pope's intent to proceed with his travel plans, despite his recent health challenges.

As a precaution, Pope Leo XIV is expected to remain hospitalized until at least October 20, during which his ongoing recovery will be closely monitored by his medical team. The situation surrounding the pope’s health continues to unfold, and updates regarding his condition and planned trip to South America are likely in the coming days.

In summary, Pope Leo XIV's recovery is progressing positively following his lung surgery, with doctors reporting good recovery indicators. His capacity to continue work and celebrate Mass in the hospital highlights his resilience, and his scheduled trip to South America remains intact for now, though his health will be a crucial factor in any future decisions.
