A 30-year-old man, Behzad Ayon, who is the owner of a construction firm named "Aria Build Corporation," has been charged in a fraud investigation taking place in Ajax. The allegations stem from a construction project involving a residence that Ayon was hired to build in August 2024.
The victim of this alleged fraud engaged Aria Build Corporation, believing in the company's professionalism and commitment. As part of the agreed-upon payment schedule for the construction of the home, the victim paid a substantial amount of $56,560. This payment was intended for enrolling the residence in a Tarion Warranty, a program designed to protect new home buyers in Ontario. Investigators claim that this payment was subsequently deposited into a bank account associated with Aria Build Corporation.
However, complications arose when a disagreement over the payment schedule occurred. Following this dispute, Aria Build Corp. ceased all work on the construction site, leaving the residence unfinished and the victim in a precarious position. In an attempt to understand the warranty protections that should have been in place, the victim reached out to Tarion, only to discover that the residence had never been enrolled in the warranty program. This revelation confirmed that the property was not protected as initially believed, raising serious concerns about the integrity of Ayon and his company.
In light of these findings, Durham Regional Police arrested and charged Behzad Ayon with two serious offenses: fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. These charges highlight the gravity of the situation and the potential repercussions for individuals who engage in fraudulent activities within the construction industry.
Authorities are now expressing concern that there may be other potential victims who have fallen prey to similar tactics by Ayon or other individuals in the construction sector. As investigations continue, police are actively encouraging anyone with information related to Aria Build Corporation or similar cases to come forward and assist in the probe.
This case not only underscores the importance of due diligence when hiring contractors but also serves as a vital reminder to consumers about the necessary checks and verifications required to protect themselves in the construction process. With the complexities of building projects and financial transactions involved, it is crucial for homeowners to ensure that their contractors are reputable and that all necessary legal protections, such as warranties, are firmly in place.
