ROME (AP) – On Saturday, rioters engaged in violent clashes with police in central Milan, resulting in looting, property destruction, and transformed the normally bustling Piazza del Duomo and a luxury shopping arcade into sites of chaos. The unrest erupted amidst a march originally intended to protest against wars and the rising cost of living, which began in a peaceful manner.

During the protest, masked individuals began throwing stones, paving blocks, and various objects at riot police. The situation escalated when barricades constructed from bar tables were set ablaze, leading to significant disturbances in the area. Visuals from the scene displayed the aftermath, including a carabinieri vehicle that was left severely damaged.

In response to the chaos, police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse the agitated crowds. Reports indicate that at least two police officers sustained injuries during the confrontations, and around 50 demonstrators, including numerous minors, were detained as a result of the violent outpourings, according to the LaPresse news agency.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took to social media to denounce the violence, asserting, “Demonstrating is a right. Setting our cities ablaze is not.” She condemned the actions of “hooligans who exploit demonstrations to sow chaos, attack those responsible for ensuring security and hold entire cities hostage.”

Additionally, Milan's center-left mayor, Giuseppe Sala, acknowledged that the reasons behind the protests were understandable. However, he clarified that the violence directed against law enforcement officials and the extensive damage inflicted upon the city could not be justified in any form.

The unrest in Milan occurred concurrently with nationwide demonstrations in neighboring France, where protestors also advocated against rising living costs and voiced support for high school students’ grievances. Similar to the events in Milan, French police resorted to using tear gas and water cannons to manage violent protesters among the crowds that joined the rallies.

The situation reflects a growing discontent across European nations, as citizens mobilize to address the pressing issues surrounding economic hardships and socio-political grievances. The violence and chaos witnessed in Milan serve to highlight the intense emotions surrounding these topics, alongside a rising demand for governmental accountability amidst increasingly difficult living conditions.
