The Toronto Maple Leafs will be missing another crucial veteran player as they navigate the NHL season. John Tavares, the team's captain and a key forward, has been ruled out week-to-week due to a lower-body injury, as announced by the team on Saturday. This designation implies that Tavares could potentially be sidelined for up to six weeks, according to reports from the organization.

Tavares suffered the injury during a game against the Buffalo Sabres, where he exited early in the third period after an awkward collision with Josh Norris. The collision involved Norris unexpectedly hitting Tavares's lower body, resulting in the Maple Leafs' star falling to the ice in evident discomfort. Medical personnel rushed to assist Tavares, who was visibly in pain, and he was subsequently taken to the dressing room for further evaluation.

Throughout the current season, Tavares has contributed significantly to the team's offense, registering two goals and five assists in just seven games. His performance has been particularly commendable considering he recently missed a game earlier in the week due to the birth of his son, adding a personal milestone to his busy schedule.

The 36-year-old forward has maintained a solid health record during his tenure with the Maple Leafs, having missed only 14 games over the past five seasons. Notably, he played in all 82 games during the previous season, showcasing his durability and importance to the team's success.

With Tavares sidelined, he joins rugged defenseman Chris Tanev on the injury report as the Maple Leafs prepare to face his former team, the New York Islanders, during Rogers Saturday Night Hockey. The highly anticipated matchup will air on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. As the Maple Leafs look to fill the void left by Tavares, it remains uncertain who will step up to replace him in the lineup.
