On Wednesday, the Ontario Liberal leadership hopefuls presented themselves as a solution to the challenges posed by Premier Doug Ford in their final debate before the upcoming voting period. The candidates included Navdeep Bains, Stephanie Bowman, Lee Fairclough, and Dylan Marando, all of whom emphasized their seriousness as politicians during a critical moment in governance.

Throughout the debate moderated by Steve Paikin, the candidates showcased consensus on numerous issues, such as the urgent need for education and health-care reforms, as well as strategies for revitalizing the third-place Liberal party. However, the candidate's positions diverged on the issue of taxation.

Lee Fairclough, one of the two Liberal caucus members in the race—alongside Bowman—expressed her intent to pursue tax reform. When asked whether she would consider raising taxes to address ongoing budget deficits, Fairclough responded that while she did not necessarily advocate for an increase, she aimed to shift the conversation regarding taxation both at municipal and provincial levels. Fairclough suggested implementing a thorough value-for-money audit throughout the provincial government to eliminate waste, examine the utilization of the Harmonized Sales Tax, and explore methods to enhance the tax base for municipalities that are financially struggling.

Dylan Marando, a veteran political advisor to former Prime Ministers Justin Trudeau and Dalton McGuinty, articulated a different approach. He proposed abolishing personal income taxes for young workers earning under $50,000 and reducing taxes for small businesses. Marando mentioned that while he did not currently have plans to increase taxes, he would be open to raising taxes on larger corporations if necessary, implying that large banks, telecommunications firms, and tech companies likely have sufficient reserves to contribute more to the economy.

Stephanie Bowman, who is a chartered accountant and former member of the Bank of Canada board, took a firm stance against raising taxes at this juncture. She articulated that the public is facing significant challenges and that the focus should be on providing financial relief responsibly to aid individuals dealing with cost-of-living pressures.

Similarly, Navdeep Bains, who served as a cabinet official in Trudeau's government before transitioning to the private sector in 2021, expressed agreement with Bowman's viewpoint. Bains emphasized the ongoing affordability crisis, citing mismanagement and corruption as critical issues within the current government. He underscored that the government is not prioritizing vital sectors that yield the highest returns on investment, specifically mentioning education and health care.

The voting period for Liberal party members is set to commence on November 9 and will continue until November 20. The announcement of the new leader is scheduled for November 21, marking a significant date for the Ontario Liberal party as it seeks direction and rejuvenation under new leadership.
