Members of the Filipino community are closely monitoring the upcoming federal budget, scheduled for release on Thursday. This year, the budget is attracting special attention as community advocates await the potential inclusion of a $100 million proposal submitted by several Filipino organizations during the federal budget consultation process.

Charmaine Ramirez, the executive director of Pwrforward, one of the groups behind the proposal, noted that this marks the first time the Filipino community has submitted such a request. "Every year, the federal government opens pre-budget consultations," Ramirez explained. "This year, the community put together its first proposal asking for a $100 million investment from the federal government to support Filipino Canadian entrepreneurs, professionals, and community infrastructure."

In October, community members engaged with Members of Parliament to underscore the importance of including this proposal in the federal budget. Liberal MP Michael Coteau expressed strong support for the initiative in a House of Commons statement on October 29. "We know that the Filipino community has contributed so much to building this country economically and socially, while also enriching our cultural fabric," Coteau said. He emphasized the need for investing in community infrastructure to unlock the potential of Filipino talents. “I will be working with the community to explore ways to move this forward. They are committed to building a stronger Canada and helping keep Canada strong,” he added.

Residents from the Filipino community in Toronto have shared their optimism that, if the budget includes the proposal, it could significantly benefit their community. "If there's funding, this will help support projects in the community," said Hygelyn Dulnuan, a Toronto resident. The community is hopeful that such investments could create opportunities and foster growth among Filipino Canadians.

In addition to advocating for the inclusion of the $100 million proposal, community members are also seeking more affordability measures in the federal budget. The ongoing challenges posed by high inflation and fluctuating gas prices are significant concerns for many. "Inflation is so high right now, and gas prices are another concern," Kadmiel Reyes pointed out. "Gas prices fluctuate. They may be lower on Fridays, but by Monday they're much higher."

As anticipation builds for the federal budget's release on Thursday, the Filipino community remains engaged, advocating for measures that could enhance their economic well-being and support aspirations for community development.
