Teen Charged After Evading RIDE Checkpoint in Hamilton

Early Thursday morning, Hamilton Police announced that they have charged a 15-year-old boy after he allegedly attempted to flee from a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checkpoint set up in East Hamilton. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Lawrence Road, when officers observed a black Honda Odyssey approaching the checkpoint.

Instead of stopping at the checkpoint, the driver accelerated past the officers at a high rate of speed, narrowly avoiding colliding with them. The police release described how the vehicle quickly evaded the checkpoint, prompting officers to pursue the car. During the chase, the driver committed several additional traffic violations before eventually bringing the vehicle to a stop.

The young driver, identified as a 15-year-old male from Hamilton, was taken into custody without any further incident following the stop. Upon further investigation, law enforcement officials discovered that the teen was in violation of a court-ordered release condition. This condition mandated that he remain at his residence during overnight hours unless accompanied by his surety.

As a result of these incidents, the teenager is now facing multiple charges. These include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, and failure to comply with a release order. The police emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, especially given the risks associated with evading law enforcement and the implications of breaching a court order.

The incident raises concerns about road safety and the responsibility of young drivers. Hamilton Police continue to encourage the community to report any suspicious or reckless driving behaviors and to adhere to road safety measures, particularly during late-night hours when such checkpoints are in operation.
