A disturbing case of distraction theft has come to light in Toronto, where a man and woman were arrested and charged for allegedly stealing a woman's jewellery. The theft involves a two-step approach, with the suspects first distracting the victim and successfully stealing her belongings, only to return a week later in an attempt to rob her again.
The initial incident occurred on June 14 at approximately 10:30 a.m.. According to the Toronto police, the suspects were driving in the vicinity of Bloor Street West and Islington Avenue when they spotted a woman outside her home. The man and woman initiated a conversation with their target, during which they requested to gift her some jewellery.
Despite the woman's reluctance to accept any gifts, the suspects persisted in placing various pieces of jewellery onto her. As they engaged her in this distraction, they also reportedly removed the more valuable jewellery that she was already wearing. The victim quickly recognized the theft and subsequently reported the incident to the police.
Subsequently, on July 22 around 1:30 p.m., the victim encountered the same two individuals once again. Recognizing them, she promptly called the police to report their presence as the suspects allegedly attempted to remove more of her jewellery. The timely call led to a swift police response.
According to a press release from the Toronto Police Service, officers were able to locate both suspects nearby at the time of the call. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Elena Alexandru, aged 30, and Ilie Caline, aged 26, both residents of Toronto. They now face multiple charges, including robbery and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense.
In addition to the primary charges, Alexandru faces an additional charge of failing to comply with an undertaking. It is essential to note that the charges have not yet been tested in court, and both accused individuals maintain their right to a fair legal process.
In light of the nature of this crime, police have released images of the suspects, indicating their belief that there may be more victims who have fallen prey to similar tactics. The release of these images serves to encourage other potential victims to come forward, thereby helping the police build a more comprehensive understanding of the incidents and possibly recover stolen property.
