Italian authorities are currently seeking the extradition of Carlo Bruzzese, a 41-year-old man residing in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. He has been convicted in absentia for his involvement with a mafia-style organization over a decade ago. According to reports from the Toronto Police Service (TPS), Bruzzese was apprehended on April 22, 2023, by the TPS Fugitive Squad in Woodbridge, Ontario.
The arrest of Carlo Bruzzese was executed based on an arrest warrant issued under the Canadian Extradition Act, which specifies that he is wanted by Italian authorities. TPS spokesperson Ashley Visser confirmed the circumstances surrounding the arrest in a statement to CityNews, emphasizing the international legal cooperation involved.
Bruzzese has a notorious background, as he was previously sentenced to six years in prison by an Italian court in 2012 due to his affiliation with the 'Ndrangheta, a prominent organized crime syndicate originating from the Calabria region of Italy. This conviction stemmed from a significant police operation conducted in 2010, which resulted in the arrest of 170 individuals connected to the 'Ndrangheta in Italy.
Adding to the family's controversial history, Carlo Bruzzese’s father, Carmelo Bruzzese, is also alleged to have connections with organized crime. He was deported from Canada in 2015, highlighting an ongoing issue of mafia influence that extends beyond borders.
Carlo Bruzzese is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Toronto on August 5, 2026. His legal representation, attorney Michael Lacy, expressed intentions to strongly challenge the extradition request made by Italian authorities. In a statement provided to CityNews, Lacy noted, “We will vigorously oppose the misguided extradition request,” underlining their commitment to his legal defense.
Lacy further stated that it would not be wise to make additional comments, as the case is currently under judicial consideration. This reflects the sensitivity and complexity of legal proceedings involving extradition, especially in cases related to organized crime.
As this case unfolds, it draws attention not only to the individual circumstances surrounding Carlo Bruzzese but also to the larger issue of international crime and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in different countries working together to combat organized crime syndicates.
