BANGKOK (AP) — The death toll from the recent flooding in southern Thailand has tragically reached at least 145 individuals, as reported by officials on Friday. The catastrophic floods, triggered by relentless heavy rains, have inflicted extensive damage across 12 southern provinces, impacting over 1.2 million households and 3.6 million people in the region.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat addressed the media in Bangkok, affirming that the fatalities occurred in eight provinces, with Songkhla province bearing the brunt, accounting for at least 110 of the deaths. The spokesperson noted that search and rescue operations have gained momentum as floodwaters have begun to recede, allowing rescuers better access to previously submerged residential areas.

Reports indicate that the death toll in Songkhla province has surged as the waters began to subside. Rescuers have successfully recovered additional bodies, particularly in Hat Yai, the largest city in southern Thailand. With the disaster department's recent updates confirming that floodwaters have receded in most regions, some areas still face high water levels, posing ongoing risks to residents.

The Meteorological Department has observed a decrease in rainfall across the southern regions; however, it has cautioned of potential thunderstorms, which may complicate recovery efforts. The floods have resulted in significant disruptions, leaving thousands stranded, blocking roads, and inundating low-rise buildings and vehicles.
