WASHINGTON (AP) – Kimberly Guilfoyle, President Donald Trump's ambassador to Greece, resigned on Tuesday amid allegations of improper conduct, asserting her intent to "vigorously defend" herself against the accusations.

The administration requested Guilfoyle's resignation following mounting criticism and allegations of potentially illegal behavior during her tenure in Athens. This announcement followed a question during the inaugural media briefing led by White House press secretary Katie Zacharia. Zacharia described Guilfoyle as a "wonderful asset to the team" and extended best wishes for her future.

The possibility of Guilfoyle's departure had been suggested previously, with Trump expressing dissatisfaction regarding the allegations on Monday. He confirmed they were "not happy" about the situation when pressed by reporters at the White House, reinforcing that the administration was assessing the circumstances surrounding her conduct.

Multiple reports from The Wall Street Journal highlighted Guilfoyle's questionable conduct, which included alleged threats to a host country official, the acceptance of improper gifts, and the offer of leveraging her position for the payment of a significant credit card bill. Guilfoyle has vehemently denied these allegations, emphasizing her "decades of public service."

In a post shared on X, Guilfoyle directly addressed the accusations, labeling them as false and asserting her commitment to defending her name and integrity. She emphasized her dedication to justice, her professional values, and her role in advocating for American exceptionalism. Her lawyers stated that the funds she sought from a Trump donor were for services related to previous public appearances, and they denied any wrongdoing regarding her travel on private jets, stating that she adhered to State Department regulations.

The allegations against Guilfoyle first emerged through reports in late September, prompting criticism from various officials. Secretary of State Marco Rubio initially supported Guilfoyle but later refrained from making public statements as the controversy escalated. He expressed frustration over journalists questioning him on the matter, insisting media reports do not constitute definitive truths.

Reports indicated that the State Department’s inspector general was examining the allegations. Although formal investigations often stem from such inquiries, the official acknowledged that not all would result in substantial investigations that could lead to disciplinary actions, including termination.

The Greek government did not respond immediately to Zacharia's statements, but Greek opposition parties had previously urged the Foreign Ministry to summon Guilfoyle to address the emerging allegations. The issue was raised in parliament, highlighting concerns over national dignity, but Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis stated that Guilfoyle was treated like any other ambassador and did not require an official summons.

While Guilfoyle attempted to maintain a public presence, posting photos of diplomatic meetings and birthday wishes on social media, leading Democrats have begun calling for an investigation into her conduct. Rep. Gregory Meeks and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, alongside Rep. Robert Garcia, have emphasized the need for scrutiny regarding the allegations outlined in reports.

The Wall Street Journal's coverage of Guilfoyle's actions revealed that she reportedly threatened guests at an official reception, hinted that the U.S. could undermine the Greek government, and was involved in allegedly promoting a Greek company’s interests while facilitating access to U.S. diplomatic meetings for lobbyists. Additionally, there were concerns about Guilfoyle's demeanor at international events, as well as allegations of alienating embassy staff.

Previously serving as a Fox News Channel host and a California prosecutor, Guilfoyle has held significant prominence, being married to Democrat Gavin Newsom during his term as San Francisco mayor and later becoming engaged to Donald Trump Jr. Her resignation underscores significant questions about accountability and conduct at high levels of government.
