COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Former President Barack Obama is set to visit Ohio on October 24 to bolster support for Democratic candidates in the highly competitive Senate and gubernatorial races. This move comes as both races have attracted substantial campaign financing, highlighting Ohio's continued importance as a battleground state.

During his campaign in Cleveland, Obama will join three-term former Senator Sherrod Brown, who is challenging Republican Senator Jon Husted for a seat that was once held by Vice President JD Vance. Brown's return to the political arena comes after being ousted two years ago by Republican Bernie Moreno in a contentious reelection campaign. Brown has been recognized as one of Ohio's most successful politicians, prompting party leaders to bring him back to the political forefront.

In addition to supporting Brown, Obama will also campaign alongside Dr. Amy Acton, the Democratic nominee for governor. Acton’s campaign has strategically focused on regions of Ohio that have recently leaned Republican in national elections. She is competing against tech billionaire and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to succeed term-limited Republican Governor Mike DeWine. Acton's outreach aims to connect with constituents in these pivotal areas.

Ohio has shifted from its historical role as a swing state to becoming a critical battleground in determining the balance of power in the Senate. Notably, President Donald Trump has recently visited the state to support Husted, emphasizing key issues like immigration, which resonates strongly with his base.

Obama's visit underscores a broader strategy by the former president to engage more deeply in the midterm elections as crucial races draw near. His involvement is expected to include additional campaign stops and advertisements as Election Day approaches. Shortly after the Ohio event, Obama will also show his support for Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in Detroit, following a divisive Democratic primary that revealed intra-party differences.

This campaign stop in Michigan will also highlight other significant Democratic candidates, including Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who is running for governor, thereby amplifying the party's presence in the region.

Obama has released a video reinforcing his support for Sherrod Brown, reminding voters of their past collaborations to protect jobs in Ohio. In the video, Obama emphasizes the importance of this race, stating, "This race is going to be close. It could determine which party controls the Senate and whether Ohioans can count on the people in Washington to be fighting for you. Please join me in supporting Sherrod Brown. He'll always fight for Ohio."

Obama's intensified involvement in these midterm races indicates a strategic approach as Democrats aim to regain power in Congress, with key elections in Ohio and Michigan at the forefront of their efforts.
