As GO Transit staff continue their efforts to repair damage caused by a derailment earlier this week, Metrolinx officials have announced that reduced rail services will remain in effect through at least the morning commute on Wednesday. They indicated that a complete resolution of the issues may take an extended period of time.

According to a statement released by the provincial transportation organization on Tuesday afternoon, “While we experienced some delays across the Lakeshore East and West lines, service has been steady network-wide.” This statement referred to revised and temporary schedules for GO Transit trains that were implemented following the incident.

Metrolinx acknowledged the inconvenience caused to thousands of customers due to the delays experienced on Monday, thanking them for their understanding as efforts to restore full service are underway. The derailment occurred just after 8:15 a.m. on Monday, involving the rear passenger car of a Kitchener-bound GO Transit train. Officials noted that the train was moving at low speed when it “experienced an issue that caused the rear of the train to come off the track and make contact with a track switch.”

The impact of the derailment resulted in significant disruptions to the signal systems, leading to widespread service impacts across both the GO Transit and UP Express networks. Early Tuesday, Metrolinx announced that the train had been “rerail[ed]” and that the damaged signaling infrastructure had been removed. However, significant repairs to the signal system itself are still necessary and are expected to take longer to complete.

“The majority of the necessary track repairs were completed today with remaining work related to the signal system, which sustained significant damage,” Metrolinx officials stated. They cautioned that the ongoing impacts from the derailment are likely to extend into the coming days as they work through the remaining repairs.

While the Metrolinx staff has not publicly identified a suspected cause for the incident, an investigation is currently underway. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries from the derailment. In a statement shared on LinkedIn Monday night, Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay assured that results of the investigation would be released “transparently once available.”

For riders affected by the derailment, there is an option to apply for a fare refund, as reported by Metrolinx officials.
