Bam Adebayo delivered an extraordinary performance on Tuesday night, scoring 83 points in a game against the Washington Wizards, falling only behind Wilt Chamberlain for the highest single-game scoring record in NBA history. Adebayo's historic feat contributed to the Miami Heat's 150-129 victory, establishing records for both free throws made and attempted in a game.

Coach Erik Spoelstra described Adebayo's performance as "an absolutely surreal night." The star player dominated right from the start, racking up 31 points in the first quarter alone. By halftime, Adebayo had already scored 43 points and finished the third quarter with a total of 62. His incredible scoring continued in the fourth quarter despite being double and triple-teamed by the Wizards' defense, which frequently sent him to the foul line.

Adebayo's final statistics were staggering: he shot 20 of 43 from the field, 36 of 43 from the free throw line, and 7 for 22 from three-point range. This performance marked a unique moment in NBA history, highlighting a night that Adebayo will never forget. Overwhelmed with emotion, he was seen in tears while hugging his mother, Marilyn Blount, after the game.

Adebayo's girlfriend, A'ja Wilson, a four-time WNBA MVP, humorously acknowledged his achievement on social media, stating, "Well, won’t have the highest career high in the house anymore, but at least it gives me something to go after." His dunk with just 22 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave him 62 points for the game, breaking the Heat's single-game scoring record of 61 previously held by LeBron James since March 3, 2014.

Prior to Adebayo's remarkable night, the highest point total recorded in the current NBA season was 56 by Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Christmas night. Remarkably, Adebayo surpassed Bryant’s previous record of 81 points, which had stood as the second-highest single-game scoring achievement for two decades until now.

Adebayo achieved a career-high score even before the end of the first half, accumulating 31 points in the opening quarter. This not only broke the Heat record for points in any quarter but also tied the team record for points in a first half before the second quarter even commenced. His 43-point first half set a new team record, surpassing his previous career-high of 41 points established on January 23, 2021, against the Brooklyn Nets.

Entering the game, Adebayo’s season-high was just 32 points. He reached that mark by making a free throw with 5:53 left in the second quarter, effectively breaking the Heat's record for first-half scoring.

31-point Quarter

Adebayo's stunning 31-point quarter marks the highest-scoring quarter in the NBA since Karl-Anthony Towns scored 32 points in the third quarter for the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 14, 2022. Throughout the last three decades, only three other players have been able to score at least 31 points within a single quarter.

These players include Klay Thompson, who set an NBA record for any quarter with 37 points for the Golden State Warriors against the Sacramento Kings on January 23, 2015; Kevin Love, who scored 34 points for the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Portland Trail Blazers on November 23, 2016; and Carmelo Anthony, with 33 points for the Denver Nuggets against the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 10, 2008.

The previous Heat record for points scored in a first quarter was 25, accomplished by LeBron James at Cleveland on March 18, 2014. He was the only player before Adebayo to have achieved a 25-point quarter in Heat history, as part of his own record-setting 61-point game against Charlotte.

Prior to his record-setting game, Adebayo had never scored more than 19 points in any single quarter throughout his career.

43-point Half

Adebayo's 43-point first half ranks as the second-best in the NBA over the last 30 seasons, dating back to the beginning of the digital play-by-play era in the 1996-97 season. The NBA record for points in a first half is 53, a milestone shared by David Thompson of the Denver Nuggets and George Gervin of the San Antonio Spurs, both of whom achieved this remarkable feat on April 9, 1978, during their competition for the league's scoring title.
