BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jack Quinn played a pivotal role in the Buffalo Sabres' 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. He scored the tying goal during regulation and successfully netted a goal in the shootout, while Alex Tuch capped off the tiebreaker with a decisive goal. This victory allowed the Sabres to bounce back from their recent defeat, marking their first loss since the Olympic break.
The game was crucial for Buffalo, which had previously experienced a setback with a 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on Thursday night. This defeat halted their impressive eight-game winning streak. Despite this loss, the Sabres, who currently lead the Atlantic Division, extended their lead over second-place Tampa Bay to four points, while they remain two points behind the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference standings.
For Toronto, the match marked their first outing after the season-ending injury to their captain, Auston Matthews. Matthews suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee during a game against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, a result of a knee-on-knee collision with defenseman Radko Gudas. Gudas, who was assessed a major penalty and ejected from the game, has since been suspended for five games due to the incident.
In a well-rounded performance for Buffalo, defenseman Owen Power joined Quinn on the scoresheet, scoring the first goal of the game. Alex Lyon, the Sabres' goaltender, displayed strong form by stopping 16 shots throughout the night. On the opposing side, Max Domi marked his 800th NHL game with one goal, while Dakota Joshua also found the back of the net. Joseph Woll, the Maple Leafs' goaltender, was credited with 30 saves in the matchup.
The game unfolded with an energetic pace, beginning with Power scoring at 2:01 in the first period, courtesy of a wrist shot from the high slot following a pass from Zach Benson behind the goal. The Maple Leafs equalized when Joshua scored at 7:09 in the first period with a snap shot from the middle. Domi then gave Toronto a brief lead at 53 seconds into the second period after a breakaway with teammate William Nylander.
However, the Sabres fought back, with Quinn tying the game at 2 with a power-play goal at 8:39 remaining in the second period. He expertly placed a wrist shot from the left side into the net, assisted by a clever pass from Noah Ostlund. The match concluded with Quinn's shootout prowess securing the victory, as Tuch finished with the final nail in the coffin for the Maple Leafs.
Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will face off against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night, hoping to regroup and build on their recent performance after a rough patch following the Olympics.
