Man Arrested for Trespassing in Hippo Enclosure

A Thai man has been arrested after a shocking incident involving Moo Deng, a popular pygmy hippo that has captured hearts on social media. According to Khao Kheow Open Zoo officials, the man entered Moo Deng's enclosure on Tuesday evening while a zoo keeper was away and no other visitors were present.

The zoo’s director, Narongwit Chodchoy, reported that security footage, which has since gone viral online, depicts the individual wearing a black beanie, sunglasses, a green tank top, and brown shorts. He approached both Moo Deng and her mother, Jona, while apparently trying to record or take photos of them with a tablet.

The man reportedly spent one to two minutes inside the enclosure before staff members became aware of the situation. Notably, he did not attempt to escape when the zoo called the police, which indicates a lack of immediate concern for consequences. Narongwit noted that no harm came to Moo Deng or Jona during the encounter as the man did not try to touch them.

Moo Deng has gained significant fame since her birth in 2024, primarily due to delightful pictures and videos shared by one of her keepers on social media. Her irresistible charm has attracted large crowds from both Thailand and abroad, all eager to see her in person and capture their own photos and videos of this adorable hippo.

Following the incident, police have charged the man with trespassing, and an investigation is still in progress. The zoo has expressed its intention to pursue all available legal actions against him. Although his identity has not been disclosed, Narongwit informed that the man has since been released on bail.

In light of the incident, the zoo released a statement on their official Facebook page, conveying that both Moo Deng and Jona seemed slightly startled but are safe. They will be monitored closely by a veterinarian to ensure their well-being in the wake of the disturbance.

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo is located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Bangkok and spans 800 hectares (almost 2,000 acres). It is home to over 2,000 animals, making it a popular destination for visitors interested in wildlife and nature.

Zoo officials have emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and instructions provided by staff to protect both visitors and the animals. This highlight underscores a growing concern regarding visitor behavior and the safety protocols in place at wildlife facilities.
