Justin Timberlake faced challenges during field sobriety tests after being pulled over by police in Sag Harbor, located in New York's Hamptons, in June 2024. Video footage released by the Sag Harbor Police Department depicts the pop star struggling to perform the tests, which required him to walk in a straight line and stand on one leg. At one point, Timberlake commented, "these are like really hard tests."
The footage, which spans approximately eight hours, captures the moments following Timberlake’s initial stop. Authorities indicated that he had run a stop sign, swerved out of his lane, and exited his BMW with the scent of alcohol on him. Timberlake later admitted to having consumed just one martini before attempting to follow friends home from a nearby location.
When questioned by the officers on why he was in the area, Timberlake stated, "I’m on a world tour." Upon prompting by an officer about what he was doing, Timberlake hesitated and replied, "Hard to explain. World tour. I’m Justin Timberlake." This moment highlighted the surreal nature of the situation he found himself in, leading to further inquiries about his identity and the need for his driver’s license.
During the interaction with the police, Timberlake appeared flustered and nervous, expressing that his heart was racing. He acknowledged his anxiety, stating, "I’m a little nervous." After being placed in the back of the police vehicle, he questioned the officers, "Why are you arresting me?" Upon arrival at the police station, Timberlake was informed he would be held overnight, to which he reacted with surprise, asking, "I’m going to be here all night? You guys are wild, man." He also requested that the light in his cell remain on as he was locked in.
The release of the footage followed negotiations between the village and Timberlake’s attorneys, who initially sought to block its dissemination on the grounds that it would invade Timberlake's privacy and harm his reputation. However, in a joint filing with the village, they later conceded that the video did not constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy as defined under New York’s public information law.
Timberlake ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of impaired driving in September 2024. As part of his plea agreement, he was required to deliver a public safety announcement regarding the dangers of driving under the influence. This deal also resulted in a downgrade of his initial misdemeanor charge to a noncriminal traffic violation. In addition to this agreement, Timberlake was sentenced to a $500 fine, 25 hours of community service, and a 90-day suspension of his driver’s license.
Sag Harbor officials expressed their satisfaction at the resolution of the matter and their compliance with state public records law. The village emphasized their commitment to adhering to the mandates of the Freedom of Information Law, ensuring that all records or video footage from the police department undergo appropriate review and redaction to safeguard public safety and privacy considerations.
This incident not only highlights the legal troubles faced by Timberlake but also underscores broader issues concerning public figures, privacy rights, and the implications of DUI offenses.
