In a shocking case in eastern France, a 9-year-old boy has been rescued after enduring a year locked inside his father's utility van since 2024. This disturbing incident was brought to light by local authorities following a tip-off from a neighbor who reported hearing "sounds of a child" emanating from the van in the village of Hagenbach, situated near the borders of Switzerland and Germany.

Local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz stated that police forced the van open on Monday, revealing a heartbreaking scene. The child was discovered lying in a fetal position, naked, and covered by a blanket on top of a pile of trash and filth. He appeared severely malnourished and was unable to walk due to the prolonged time spent in a seated position.

The boy's father explained to investigators that he placed the child in the van in November 2024 as a misguided attempt "to protect him," stemming from concerns that his partner wanted to admit the then 7-year-old to a psychiatric hospital. Sexual abuse was not indicated in the case, and Heitz noted that there were no medical records indicating any psychiatric issues for the boy before his disappearance. Notably, the child had been performing well academically prior to this ordeal.

In his account to investigators, the boy revealed that he had faced significant difficulties with his father's partner and believed that his father felt he had no other option but to confine him. He further expressed that he had not bathed since 2024, highlighting the deplorable conditions he endured.

The father has since been charged with preliminary kidnapping among other counts and is currently in custody. Meanwhile, his partner, who denied any knowledge of the child being locked in the van, faces preliminary charges including failure to help a minor in danger. She has been released under judicial supervision.

As part of the aftermath of this tragic situation, the boy's 12-year-old sister and the 10-year-old daughter of his father's partner have been placed under the care of social services. The prosecutor's office is actively investigating whether any other individuals were aware of the boy's detention, as friends and family had been led to believe he was in a psychiatric institution, and his teachers were informed that he had transferred to another school.

Residents of Hagenbach, approached by The Associated Press, expressed their shock over the incident, stating they were unaware of the boy's conditions and chose not to discuss further details. The prosecutor has declined to provide additional comments pending the ongoing investigation.
