A Vancouver-based real estate agent, Nima Alizadeh-Gharib, has been reprimanded by the BC Financial Services Authority (BCFSA) for sending an antisemitic message through social media to a restaurant in Toronto. The incident took place on December 22, 2024, when Alizadeh-Gharib, who is affiliated with Coldwell Banker Prestige Realty, sent a direct message from his personal Instagram account that was deemed "antisemitic, violent, and hateful."
Initially believing that his personal Instagram account was private and only viewable by approved followers, Alizadeh-Gharib was unaware that representatives from the restaurant had access to the message. The consent order indicates that his personal Instagram identified him as a B.C. real estate professional and provided links to his professional account, making it evident that the message was not sent anonymously but rather from a regulated individual within the profession.
Following the incident, Alizadeh-Gharib issued a written apology to the restaurant on January 6, 2025, accepting full responsibility for his actions and acknowledging the harm caused by his behavior. In May 2025, during discussions with the BCFSA, he claimed that his state of intoxication at the time influenced his actions. He also mentioned having seen a social media post that alleged the restaurant was financially supporting the Israeli Defence Forces in their operations in Gaza, which may have contributed to his inflammatory response.
After sending the hateful message, Alizadeh-Gharib was cautioned by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that further contact with the restaurant could lead to criminal charges. His behavior not only resulted in a professional reprimand but also prompted regulatory scrutiny regarding his conduct as a licensed real estate agent.
As part of the repercussions, Alizadeh-Gharib has agreed to pay a fine of $2,350 and complete a specialized educational program through the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC). The BCFSA emphasized that he affirms his commitment to ongoing education and aims to develop a deeper understanding of the ramifications of his actions. Failure to comply with the terms set forth in the consent order could result in the suspension of his real estate license.
