The man accused of attempting to storm the ballroom at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner with firearms and knives, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, had expressed intentions to target Trump administration officials. President Donald Trump revealed in an interview with Fox News Channel that Allen’s family had raised concerns with law enforcement prior to the event, providing new insights into a chaotic situation that disrupted one of Washington's prestigious annual gatherings on April 25, 2026.

According to Trump, Allen's family notified police in Connecticut, which played a crucial role in the events surrounding the gala dinner held at the Washington Hilton with its typically stringent security measures. Law enforcement expected to press criminal charges against Allen the following Monday. Acting Department of Justice leader Todd Blanche stated that the suspect had traveled by train from California and had checked in as a guest at the hotel days before the dinner.

Preliminary investigations by law enforcement, who conducted interviews with Allen's relatives and examined his electronic devices and writings, suggest he aimed to target administration members present at the dinner. Allen reportedly attempted to charge into the hotel's expansive ballroom but was subdued, resulting in gunfire and an immediate evacuation of President Trump from the stage, while guests sought cover beneath their tables.

“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche noted during an appearance on NBC's “Meet the Press.” The suspect allegedly acquired the two firearms he carried within the last couple of years and was described as uncooperative during the investigation. He was expected to face multiple charges soon after the incident.

Footage circulated on social media showed Allen running past security barricades while Secret Service agents rushed toward him. Reports indicated that a Secret Service officer was struck by a bullet but sustained only non-life-threatening injuries, thanks to the protective gear he was wearing. The officer is projected to recover fully, according to Blanche's statements on various Sunday talk shows.

Social media activity associated with Allen presents him as a highly educated individual, having obtained a master’s degree in computer science from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. His profile indicated involvement in a Christian student fellowship and a campus group that engaged in Nerf gun battles.

The shooting incident occurred shortly after the event commenced, causing panic as attendees ducked for safety. Witnesses described the tense atmosphere, with chants of "God Bless America" emerging among guests as Trump was ushered off the stage amidst the chaos. Outside the hotel, National Guard members and various law enforcement agencies quickly responded to the developing situation.

Following an initial effort to resume the dinner, the event was ultimately canceled for the evening and was slated to be rescheduled. Amid the turmoil, actors and journalists at the gala flooded social media with accounts of the unfolding events, capturing the gravity of the situation.

Trump, addressing the media afterwards, expressed awareness that the incident marked what he perceived as a third attempt on his life within a two-year span and called for unity in a world increasingly marred by violence. “It’s always shocking when something like this happens. Happened to me, a little bit. And that never changes,” he remarked during a hastily organized news conference at the White House.
