WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump expressed a solemn and conciliatory tone after what he perceived as the third attempt on his life in less than two years. During an impromptu news conference at the White House on Saturday evening, he attributed his status as a target to his personal politics and invoked calls for unity and healing amidst a climate of escalating violence worldwide.
Trump remarked on the shocking nature of such incidents, stating, “It’s always shocking when something like this happens... and that never changes.” This comment came shortly after an armed man attempted to breach security at the Washington hotel where Trump was scheduled to speak at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Authorities apprehended the suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California.
During the conference, Trump asserted that the presidency is inherently dangerous, claiming, “No country is immune,” to political violence. He suggested that his presidency’s significance made him a target, stating, “I’ve studied assassinations... the most impactful people, the ones that make the biggest impact, they’re the ones that they go after.” He called on Americans to set aside their political differences, expressing admiration for the goodwill he perceived among attendees at the dinner.
“We have to resolve our differences,” he said, noting the diverse crowd comprised of Republicans, Democrats, and independents demonstrating a spirit of camaraderie. Trump shared how he was impressed by the overwhelming positivity of the event, remarking on the interactions he witnessed between political opponents.
In line with this conciliatory tone, Trump later claimed that he had initially planned to deliver a critical address regarding the media but opted instead for a “speech of love” following the incident. “But I didn’t get a chance to do that... probably I was better off, if I didn’t,” he reflected. Nevertheless, Trump maintained some of his signature edge by denouncing the suspect, labeling him as “a sick, bad person” responsible for altering the nation’s course.
Despite previous calls for unity, Trump’s transition to conciliatory rhetoric often proved fleeting. After a similar violent incident during a 2024 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump later pivoted back to combative language, reiterating unfounded claims about the 2020 election. He has faced increasing scrutiny regarding the polarizing nature of his speeches, with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche noting a distinct trend in threats associated with Trump and his administration.
Interestingly, the recent incident occurred with First Lady Melania Trump at his side, leading him to comment on her emotional response, describing it as “a rather traumatic experience.” The attack came ahead of King Charles III’s planned visit to the U.S., which Buckingham Palace confirmed would proceed as scheduled despite the security concerns raised by the dinner incident.
As the nation grapples with rising political violence, Trump’s recent statements reflect an ongoing tension between his urges for unity and his propensity for divisiveness. His latest remarks have sparked discussions on the implications of political rhetoric in contributing to societal unrest and the need for more profound reflections on healing amidst heightened tensions.
