Toronto police are seeking assistance from the public to locate two women linked to a distraction theft investigation involving elderly victims. The incidents started on April 5, when a man was sitting in his car in the Scarborough area, specifically near Birchmount Road and Eglinton Avenue East.
According to authorities, the man was approached by two women who distracted him by asking for directions. During this diversion, the women allegedly managed to remove the victim's gold necklace from his neck and replaced it with a fake one. The exact moment the victim realized his jewelry was missing remains unclear, but it is reported that the women fled the scene in a black SUV shortly after the theft.
Just under two weeks later, on April 17, police received a further report about one of the suspects attempting to steal from a second victim. This incident occurred near Ellesmere Road and Wye Valley Road, where the woman tried to remove the gold chain from the second victim but was unsuccessful in her attempt. Detectives believe this second incident further indicates that the women are purposely targeting elderly individuals, making them a serious concern for local authorities.
Investigation into the thefts has led police to identify one of the suspects as 37-year-old Victoria Miclescu, a resident of Toronto. She is currently facing two charges: theft over $5,000 and attempted theft. Investigators are still working diligently to identify the second woman involved in the April 5 incident. The authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information regarding the suspects or the incidents to come forward.
The Toronto police's appeal highlights the ongoing issue of distraction thefts, particularly those that target vulnerable populations, such as the elderly. Police emphasize the importance of community awareness and vigilance in helping to curb such criminal activities.
