NEW DELHI (AP) – In a significant political shift, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has gained control of the opposition stronghold of West Bengal during a crucial state election. According to the Election Commission of India, partial results released on Monday revealed that the BJP secured at least 124 seats in the 294-member West Bengal assembly, with leads in an additional 83 constituencies. This victory marks a pivotal moment as Modi's party has never governed West Bengal and has aimed for years to unseat the All India Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a prominent critic of Modi who has maintained power since 2011.

The BJP's dominance in the election has drawn criticism from opposition parties regarding the integrity of the polls, particularly in light of the Election Commission's decision to remove millions of voters from the electoral rolls. This decision raised concerns about voter disenfranchisement and fairness in the electoral process.

In addition to the successful bid in West Bengal, the BJP has seen the ousting of governments in two other states and managed to retain power in a fourth state following elections held in April. India, with its vast population of over 1.4 billion people spread across 28 states and eight federal territories, has experienced staggered elections, with multiple regions voting each year.

The implications of the West Bengal election results are significant for Modi's political future and his party's standing. This victory is expected to enhance Modi's influence as he navigates the midpoint of his third term in office, especially with the upcoming 2024 national elections in mind. The BJP's reliance on regional allies to form a government will be critical, as Modi is gearing up for a potential record fourth term in the 2029 elections. Addressing supporters at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Modi emphasized that this electoral success signifies the party's expanding appeal in a state historically resistant to BJP rule, stating, "A new chapter has been added to Bengal's destiny."

The results have posed a setback for India's opposition, which has struggled to present a unified and sustained challenge against the BJP on a national scale. Mamata Banerjee was once perceived as a formidable rival to Modi, particularly as she sought to consolidate regional parties against the BJP. Her defeat is anticipated to diminish her influence within an opposition landscape already fractured by ongoing regional rivalries.

In a notable development beyond West Bengal, popular film star Joseph Vijay achieved a breakthrough victory in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. His party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, established only two years ago, successfully ousted the ruling DMK party. Tamil Nadu, recognized as one of India's most developed states, has a history of electing actors into political office, underscoring the unique interplay between entertainment and politics in the region.

Additionally, in Kerala, the Indian National Congress-led opposition ended the ruling communist government's tenure, marking the conclusion of leftist governance in one of its last significant strongholds. The BJP also celebrated its return to power in the northeastern state of Assam, achieving a third consecutive term.
